Pelvic Floor Foundations – Why it Matters more than you think

Let’s talk about something most women were never properly taught.

Your pelvic floor.

Not in a clinical, overwhelming way… just in a way that actually makes sense for your body and your life.

Your pelvic floor is a group of muscles that sit at the base of your pelvis. I always describe it like a support hammock. It holds and supports your bladder, bowel and uterus, but it’s not just sitting there doing nothing.

It’s working all day, every day.

With your breath.

With your core.

With how you stand, walk, lift and move.

And this is the part most women have never been shown properly…

👉 Your pelvic floor is directly connected to your breathing.

🌬️ Your Breath Is Driving Everything

Inside your body, your diaphragm (the muscle under your lungs) and your pelvic floor work together as a team.

When you inhale, your diaphragm moves down to create space for your lungs to fill with air.

As that happens, everything gently moves down and out of the way… including your pelvic floor. It softens, lengthens, and drops.

Then as you exhale, your diaphragm lifts back up, and everything underneath follows.

Your pelvic floor gently lifts and returns back up into place.

This is your body’s natural rhythm.

Inhale → everything moves down and softens

Exhale → everything lifts and supports

And this is where things start to click.

Because when we lose this rhythm — through stress, tension, rushing, or holding — that’s when dysfunction can start to creep in.

💡 Why This Matters in Real Life

If you’re constantly holding your breath, bracing hard, rushing movement, or living in a stressed, always “on” state, your pelvic floor often stops moving naturally with your breath.

Instead of lifting and relaxing, it either becomes weak and unresponsive or tight and overactive.

And both can create issues.

🌿 Not Just Weak… Sometimes It’s Tight

One of the biggest misconceptions is that the pelvic floor just needs to be squeezed more.

But your pelvic floor doesn’t just need to be strong.

It needs to lift, relax, and move with your breath.

And for many women, the issue isn’t weakness… it’s tension.

This is what we call a tight or overactive pelvic floor.

It can feel like pelvic pain, tight hips, lower back discomfort, a feeling of pressure, or even leaking. Yes, even tight muscles can leak, because they can’t respond properly when they need to.

A muscle that is always “on” can’t function the way it’s meant to.

🌿 Learning to Let Go

This is why relaxation is just as important as strength.

After a long day, a stressful day, a heavy workout, or even just a lot of walking, your body can hold onto tension.

This is where we bring things back down.

Simple positions like child’s pose, a gentle froggy stretch, or lying on your back with support under your legs can help your body feel safe enough to relax.

Then we add breath.

A slow inhale, letting your belly expand…

And allowing your pelvic floor to soften and drop.

No forcing.

No pushing.

Just allowing.

This is how you teach your body that it doesn’t always have to hold on.

💛 What Your Body Might Be Telling You

If you’re feeling tight through your hips, sore through your lower back, or like your body is always a bit “on edge”, your pelvic floor may be part of that picture.

Your body is always communicating.

And sometimes what we think is tightness or stiffness is actually your body trying to protect you by bracing and holding.

👩‍⚕️ Getting the Right Support

This is also where having the right support can make a huge difference.

Working with a Women’s Health Physio gives you something we simply can’t do from the outside…

👉 eyes on the inside

They can assess what’s actually happening internally, help you understand whether you need to learn to lift, relax, or both, and guide you back to feeling in control of your body again.

It’s not about something being wrong.

It’s about learning your body properly.

🏋️‍♀️ Bringing It Into Your Training

When we bring this into strength training, everything starts to connect

Before you lift, instead of rushing in or bracing hard, you take a breath out, gently lift through the pelvic floor, lightly connect through your core, and then move.

It’s subtle, but it changes everything.

Your lifts feel more controlled.

Your body feels more supported.

You’re not pushing through pressure… you’re working with it.

🚶‍♀️ And Into Everyday Life

This isn’t just something you do on a mat.

This is real life.

Getting out of a chair.

Picking something up.

Lifting your kids.

Exhale, gentle lift, move.

Over time, it becomes natural. You don’t have to think about it as much.

That’s the goal.

💡 The Knack

There’s one simple tool that can make a big difference straight away.

It’s called The Knack.

Before something that creates pressure — like a cough, sneeze, laugh or jump — you gently lift your pelvic floor just before it happens, then let it go after.

That quick connection helps support your body in those moments and builds control over time.

🤍 Final Thought

You don’t need to get this perfect.

You don’t need to master it overnight.

You just need to start noticing.

Start feeling.

Start understanding when to lift… and when to let go.

Because real strength doesn’t start with how hard you train.

It starts with how well your body is functioning underneath it all.

And that’s what we’re building here.

From the Inside to Out.

StrongHer Brain

Why Omega-3s Matter More Than You Think

The other day I was listening to a podcast with Dr. Mary Claire Haver interviewing Louisa Nicola.

They were talking about the female brain.

Alzheimer’s.

Dementia.

Longevity.

And one statistic stopped me in my tracks.

Out of three people diagnosed with Alzheimer’s… two are women.

Two.

That is not just “interesting.” That is confronting.

As women, we spend so much time worrying about our waistlines, our hormones, our energy, our skin. But what about our brain? The organ that runs everything. The one we need sharp, steady and strong for decades to come.

One of the key things Louisa kept coming back to?

Omega-3 fatty acids.

Why Omega-3s Matter for the Female Brain

Omega-3s, particularly DHA and EPA, are structural fats in the brain. DHA especially makes up a large portion of brain cell membranes. It helps:

Support memory and cognitive function

Reduce neuroinflammation

Support mood stability

Protect against age-related brain decline

Support hormone signalling in the brain

There is strong research linking higher omega-3 intake with reduced risk of cognitive decline and Alzheimer’s disease. Studies have shown that DHA levels are often lower in people with Alzheimer’s, and that adequate intake may slow cognitive ageing in some populations.

We also know that during perimenopause and menopause, fluctuating oestrogen impacts brain metabolism and inflammation. That is one reason why women may be more vulnerable to cognitive decline as we age.

Which makes nutrition even more important.

Louisa mentioned that to reach optimal brain-protective levels through food alone, you would need the equivalent of around ten salmon steaks a day.

Ten.

Now unless you are living on a fishing trawler, that is probably not happening.

So this is where the conversation around consistent fatty fish intake and possibly high-quality fish oil supplementation becomes relevant, particularly as we move into our 40s, 50s and beyond.

This is not about fear.

It is about strategy.

Train smart. Heal strong. Think long term.

The Simple Salmon Shift

Now here is the funny part.

I am not even a massive salmon fan.

But lately I have been making this ridiculously simple baked salmon tray and I cannot stop.

One pan.

Leftover fridge veg.

Lemon.

Garlic.

Onion.

Salt.

Pepper.

Oven on. Done.

It is light. It is fresh. It tastes better than it has any right to.

And when you understand that you are not just eating protein… you are feeding your brain… it hits differently.

You can bulk it out with:

Brown rice

Quinoa

Sweet potato

A big leafy side salad

It becomes a full StrongHer plate. Protein. Fibre. Healthy fats. Colour.

Simple. Sustainable. Brain supportive.

What About Chia Seeds?

Yes. Chia seeds contain ALA, a plant-based omega-3.

They are fantastic for:

Fibre

Gut health

Blood sugar stability

General anti-inflammatory support

But here is the important part.

ALA must be converted into DHA and EPA in the body, and that conversion rate is quite low. That means chia is amazing, but it may not be enough on its own for optimal brain protection.

So think:

Fatty fish 2 to 3 times per week

Chia or flax for daily fibre and plant omegas

Consideration of a quality omega-3 supplement if intake is low

This is especially relevant for women who do not eat fish regularly.

Brain Health Is Strength Training Too

We talk a lot about building muscle.

But what about building brain resilience?

Research around neuroplasticity shows that exercise, resistance training and adequate protein intake all support brain function as well. Strength training improves insulin sensitivity, reduces inflammation and increases blood flow to the brain.

It is not either or.

It is both.

Lift the weights.

Eat the salmon.

Sleep properly.

Manage stress.

Strong body. Strong brain.

The Bigger Conversation

Here is the part that really landed for me.

We are all going to age.

We cannot control every genetic card we were dealt. But we can influence lifestyle inputs.

Nutrition.

Movement.

Stress.

Sleep.

Connection.

Health is one of the few things we have some control over.

We have one brain.

One body.

And we are living in it for the rest of our life.

If that means we rattle like a pill jar at some point with targeted, evidence-based supplements… so be it.

But let it be intentional.

Let it be educated.

Let it be proactive.

If you want my ridiculously simple baked salmon tray recipe, comment below or send me a message and I will flick it through.

StrongHer brain.

StrongHer body.

Long game always.

Why Pelvic Health Matters

Why Pelvic Health Matters (Even If You’re Not Postpartum)

Rebuild your strength from the inside out, starting with your breath.

When most people think of the pelvic floor, they think of postnatal recovery or maybe a little leaking when they sneeze. But here’s the truth:
Your pelvic floor is a key part of your core. Every woman deserves to understand how it works, how to connect with it, and how to support it for life.

Let’s break it down.

What is the pelvic floor?

The pelvic floor is a group of muscles and connective tissue that sits like a hammock at the base of your pelvis.
These muscles:

  • Support your bladder, uterus, and bowel

  • Help control when you wee, poo, or pass wind

  • Work with your deep abdominal muscles, diaphragm, and back to stabilize your core

  • Move with your breath

  • React and respond during strength training and everyday movement

If you’ve experienced leaking, heaviness, back pain, core weakness, or just a sense of not feeling “held” in your body, your pelvic floor could be asking for support.

Why breathing is the first step

Before jumping to squeezing or lifting weights, we need to start with something simple — your breath.

Your diaphragm (breathing muscle) and your pelvic floor are teammates.

  • When you inhale: your diaphragm lowers and your pelvic floor gently lengthens

  • When you exhale: your diaphragm lifts, and your pelvic floor can naturally recoil and lift too

Here’s the catch. Stress, poor posture, and abdominal gripping (sucking your belly in all day) can disrupt this connection.

That’s why in my programs, we begin with breath-led pelvic floor awareness so you learn to feel the difference between a relaxed, responsive pelvic floor and a constantly clenched one.

💛 Pelvic floor health isn’t just about lifting. It’s about letting go, too.

Everyday movements matter

Your pelvic floor doesn’t just clock on at the gym. It supports you all day long.
Learning how to connect with your pelvic floor and deep core helps you:

  • Pick up your kids without bracing

  • Walk, run, and move without leaking

  • Go to the toilet without straining

  • Breathe better and reduce anxiety

  • Stand taller and move with more confidence

By building awareness, you begin to build function. Everyday tasks become opportunities to reconnect.

Can I strength train with pelvic floor issues?

Yes, and you should.
Strength training is one of the best things you can do to support your pelvic floor when it’s done with awareness.

Avoiding exercise because you leak or feel weak can make things worse over time.
We want you lifting safely, progressively, and with confidence.

That’s why in my Empower Core & Floor program and small group training sessions, I teach you how to:

  • Breathe and engage correctly during lifts

  • Know when to modify or scale back

  • Build from bodyweight to dumbbells

  • Train your pelvic floor as part of your full-body strength, not in isolation

You don’t have to get back to normal.
You get to build something stronger, smarter, and more supported than before.

You are not behind.

Pelvic floor dysfunction is common, but it’s not something you have to live with.

Whether you’ve had babies, never been pregnant, or it’s been decades since birth, it’s never too late to reconnect with your core and feel at home in your body again.

Strength Training For Women – A key to easing Perimenopause Symptoms…

Strength Training for Women: A Key to Easing Perimenopause Symptoms, Maintaining Muscle Mass, and Managing Body Fat

As women enter perimenopause, typically in their 40s, many experience a shift in their bodies. Hormonal fluctuations can lead to a range of symptoms, including hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, and changes in metabolism. During this time, maintaining a healthy, balanced lifestyle becomes even more important, and one of the most powerful tools at your disposal is strength training.

Strength training isn’t just about lifting heavy weights—it’s about supporting your body’s health, resilience, and overall well-being during this transition. In this blog, we’ll explore why strength training is particularly important for women in perimenopause and beyond, helping ease symptoms, maintain muscle mass, and manage body fat.

1. Strength Training Helps Ease Perimenopause Symptoms

Perimenopause can bring on a variety of symptoms, many of which are related to hormonal imbalances, including estrogen and progesterone. One of the most important changes that strength training can help with is improving how your body manages stress.

  • Stress Reduction: Strength training can reduce the production of cortisol, the hormone responsible for stress. When cortisol levels are lower, you might notice fewer mood swings and a greater sense of emotional stability. This is particularly helpful during perimenopause, when stress can exacerbate symptoms like hot flashes and sleep disturbances.

  • Improved Sleep: Exercise, including strength training, has been shown to improve sleep quality, which is crucial for managing perimenopausal symptoms. Better sleep helps regulate hormone levels and can alleviate the insomnia that many women face during this time.

  • Mood Stabilization: Strength training triggers the release of endorphins, the “feel-good” hormones, which help combat mood swings, anxiety, and even depression that may arise during perimenopause. Regular workouts can help foster a sense of empowerment and well-being, supporting emotional balance.

2. Maintaining Muscle Mass as We Age

As women age, particularly during perimenopause and menopause, muscle mass naturally declines due to a decrease in estrogen levels. This loss of muscle mass can lead to weaker muscles, decreased bone density, and a higher risk of injury. Strength training is an effective way to prevent this decline and maintain muscle mass.

  • Prevents Muscle Loss: Strength training challenges your muscles, encouraging them to grow stronger and more resilient. By maintaining and even building muscle mass, you’re not only helping your body stay strong but also protecting your bone health, which can be a concern as estrogen levels drop.

  • Supports Functional Strength: Maintaining muscle mass is crucial for everyday tasks. Strength training can help you stay strong and independent as you age—whether it’s lifting groceries, carrying your kids or grandkids, or simply maintaining mobility.

  • Boosts Metabolism: Muscle mass is metabolically active, meaning it burns more calories at rest than fat tissue. By maintaining muscle mass through strength training, you can help combat the slowing metabolism that often comes with perimenopause and menopause. This is key to managing your weight and keeping your body functioning at its best.

3. Strength Training Helps Manage Body Fat

During perimenopause, many women notice changes in their body composition. Hormonal shifts can lead to an increase in body fat, particularly around the abdomen, and can make it harder to lose weight. Strength training is a powerful tool to help manage body fat and maintain a healthy weight.

  • Increases Lean Muscle Mass: As mentioned, strength training helps preserve and build lean muscle mass. Because muscle burns more calories than fat, the more muscle you have, the more efficient your body becomes at burning fat—even while you’re at rest.

  • Promotes Fat Loss: Strength training can help increase your metabolism, which in turn supports fat loss. Even after your workout, your body continues to burn more calories as it recovers, thanks to a phenomenon called excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC). This helps promote fat loss and maintain a healthy body composition.

  • Regulates Insulin Sensitivity: Strength training also improves insulin sensitivity, which is important for managing blood sugar levels. This can be particularly beneficial during perimenopause, as insulin resistance can increase with age and hormonal changes. Improved insulin sensitivity helps reduce fat storage and supports weight management.

4. Overall Health Benefits of Strength Training

Beyond the specific benefits for perimenopause, strength training offers a wide range of health benefits that every woman can enjoy, including:

  • Bone Health: Strength training is one of the most effective ways to prevent bone density loss. Osteoporosis becomes a greater concern for women post-menopause, but weight-bearing exercises like strength training help stimulate bone growth and reduce the risk of fractures.

  • Heart Health: Strength training can improve cardiovascular health by reducing blood pressure, improving cholesterol levels, and supporting overall heart function.

  • Increased Energy Levels: As you get stronger, you’ll notice an improvement in your energy levels. Strength training boosts circulation and oxygen flow, helping you feel more energized and less fatigued throughout the day.

  • Improved Posture and Mobility: Strengthening your muscles supports better posture and joint health. This is especially important during perimenopause when changes in hormone levels can affect joint flexibility and stability.

Conclusion: Embrace Strength Training for a Healthier Perimenopause

Strength training is a powerful tool for managing perimenopause symptoms, maintaining muscle mass, and supporting healthy body fat levels. It’s not just about aesthetics; it’s about empowering your body to stay strong, resilient, and capable as you navigate this natural life transition.

By incorporating regular strength training into your routine, you’re investing in your health now and for the future. Whether it’s through simple bodyweight exercises, light weights, or resistance bands, the benefits are undeniable. So, grab those dumbbells, focus on your form, and give your body the care it deserves during this transformative time.

Remember, strength training is not about perfection—it’s about progress and empowering yourself to feel strong and confident every step of the way.

We should be able to love our bodies

Why do I have to look like her?

Social Media?!?

What do you think about when I say that?

I have a gripe,

It’s the subliminal messaging that infiltrates the deepest part of our physci,

It’s the teenagers and 20 something (never had a baby) girls, flaunting their fabulous ‘perfect’ bodies.

Then it’s talking about how you can look like this too, it’s easy, requires no effort

Eat some lettuce, so this diet, do this next amazing fad, it works, believe me it works!

Blah blah fkn blah.

The biggest issue here is- you know deep down that this isn’t real, this is absolute bull 🐂.

This is photoshop, fake, airbrush out the wrinkles, the lines, add something here and something there… make my loose skin on my arms firmer… firm up my butt, so it’s perky.

The worst –

Sometimes 16 year old girls posing as post natal mums. 🤦‍♀️

This is across all sorts of media including magazines.

These girls are not mothers, and/or are not healthy / or do not have a long term sustainabile lifestyle  / or they spend 2+ hours per day running, doing cardio, working out .. etc..

they do not have families,  get to stay home and nurture our babies, and/or work as well.

It’s a shame it’s like this out there in the world.

It’s even more of a shame that it’s completely ingrained in us women, that WE NEED TO LOOK A CERTAIN WAY, be a certain size.

This reinforces that in us. It’s everywhere we look.

Every damn time we pick up and scroll,

It’s there, constantly beating you , wearing down your courage,  your resolve, your confidence, your self worth and beliefs.

I’m sorry it’s there.

I want you to know for 100% certainty , that you are perfect. Just as you are.

You’re kind, you’re loving, you’re nurturing, you’re confident and fabulous, you’re an absolute wizard of a women!

Ask your kids?

Ask your husband/partner?

Ask your dlearest friends?

Ask your parents?

Ask your grandparents?

Ask me?

How do I feel better about myself? You ask, How do we avoid this?

It’s not unavoidable, however you can change your approach and take control back.

– UNFOLLOW EVERYONE who does not line up with YOUR VALUES.

Anyone who does not bring happiness and joy and enriches your life – unfollow

Let me remind you- you are YOU!

Unique beautiful you.

No one can take that away from you, except you.

There are many lifestyle factors that affect our journey to get to the point where we are ‘happy’ with how we look.

  • I’ll come back to that.

You life is comprised of so many factors

Your demands of daily life dictate how much time you can allocate to the tasks you need to or want to achieve daily.

Everyone’s looks different

There are seasons of your life where you have more things on the go.

And seasons where you have much more space and time.

Remember not everything is forever.

Things change.

Quite often in our busy season there is no time left for you to nurture and nourish yourself.

I give you permission to take time out to do something for you.

Start small and the snowball effect can happen over time.

I give you permission to not fold that basket of washing and instead make a cup of tea

And bask in the sun and stare into the trees even for 5 mins.

Will the world end of that basket doesn’t get folded today? No.

Do you feel better for taking back a moment to honor YOU?

Yes of course you do.

There are many ways you can take this time for yourself.

I’d love for you to share with me how you can start to find time in your day for you.

Building self confidence and happiness, Is shifting the direction of the speeding train & slowing it down a little.

It won’t take long for these incredible habits to start filtering into your life, life will be easier. Things will start to change.

Remember these life cycles and seasons have their moment, and you can rewrite your life at any time.

Focus on what you want and what truly matters to you.

I don’t think you’re ever entirely happy with how you look, we are our own biggest critic, but I do believe we can learn to love the way we are, and everything that we do  and who we surround ourselves with each day that leads us to a happy healthy and FUN EASY life. Regardless of asthetics.

Balance is Bullsh$t …

How do you build a business to suit your family and lifestyle?

I often get asked will I do sessions in the afternoons?

Or Saturdays?

You know why I don’t?

It’s family time!

Having your own business, is just that.

It’s YOURS to make your own rules,  to suit your lifestyle.

What are your core values ?

Mine is family.

Of course I absolutely adore & love my ladies and I love my ‘job’. But it’s not a job, it’s not work, it’s doesn’t feel like work, I love it!

I love what I do because I have built it to suit me.

This allows me the freedom to have a 100% attention into my business and giving the more love care and support I can to my clients, my girls! I love them! 😍

I get to 100% spend time with my family from 3pm Monday to Friday and weekends.

This makes it easy for me to organize my world, and the world of those around me.

IF I started to consider working afternoons and weekends. What happens?

Yes I can earn some extra money, but at what cost?

The cost to me of Losing the time with my 2 boys as they are growing up and you can’t get that time back, that pains me.

Losing quality time with my Man, we thrive on quality time togther, being present with each other and having a very healthy communicative relationship and doing fun things together.

The cost of that sacrifice is too great for me to consider.

That’s worth more to me than the extra income. I’ll make other changes to finances instead if need be.

There are always options.

I know if I was to consider those changes I would start to feel less enthusiastic about my ‘work’ and I dare say resentment would slip in.

I read an interesting book 📚

Work,Strife, Balance

Mia Freedman

It Resonates!

She said quite plainly

Balance is bullshit.

There’s no such thing.

You are either a full time working your guts out trying to make it to the top, and earning the big bucks or paying the bills.

Or you’re staying home raising a family, basking in the family life and not earning the money for those holidays and fun extra things

Everyone says – look at her, successful amazing woman – she has it all!

You know what – that’s bullshit

She doesn’t have it all.

She’s a duck! 🦆

Looks cool calm and collected on the surface and underneath she’s paddling like mad to keep it together.

Maybe when you see her, give her a hug, and don’t ask her how she does it all.

She’s probably barely coping and she probably feels awful about what’s slipping in her life.

She is failing at something, SOMETHING HAS TO GIVE!

Your career has to give , or your family?

Or worse! You give!

Which one?

You cannot give 100% attention to them all!

You will only be half assing all them, dropping the ball constantly, not being able to keep up. Constantly on the back foot.

Or you fall in a heap and you can’t do any? You burn out? You crash, your mental health suffers, your stressed out, you can’t sleep, you’re not eating properly, you are sacrificing your health and well-being ,

You’re quite possibly sacrificing your relationship with your husband/partner/kids.

I ask you- what are your core values?

What is MOST IMPORTANT TO YOU!

Yes you need to earn money to pay the bills, but do you really need to chase the CEO position while your kids are young?

We all know that this day and age, we have to have 2 incomes to survive. I get it.

All Im saying is to find out what you’re not willing to sacrifice , and start building yourself a future. You can’t have it all at the highest level. Something has to give,

So try my approach, and put down some firm boundaries around your values.

And then you can focus hard on those things that mean everything to you.

And then you thrive.

Kids only need you for so long to buy the bread, before they are buying their own.

Remember quality over quantity.

You only have one life, live it so that it fulfills you and your world.

If you feel the pull to share, feel free .

Big love to you all!
